Bookshelves

using wine bottles for support

I had collected a number of beautiful wine bottles and decided to design a bookcase using them as supports by drilling a series of holes in the shelf above each bottle into which the necks were inserted. The size of hole determined how far the neck went through and allowed me to use different size bottles to support a shelf.

Initial design for the bookshelves
design allowed each bottle to protrude through its hole in the self above. the next bottle sat astride the top of the bottle below ensuring they couldn't be removed and cause the collapse of the shelves.
the shelves wrapped around the corner of the wall keeping them upright.I drilled holes through each shelf at the corner and inserted a wooden pole and fastened them to it at the correct heights.
The top shelves required battens fixed to the wall to attach the shelves to although the support came from the bottles
